Many young children dream of becoming a policeman, pilot, firefighter, doctor, soldier, etc. when they grow up. Not too many young children dream of becoming a mountain climber, except perhaps if they have relatives or close friends that are mountaineers. It is understandable and for good reason – mountain climbing can be an extremely difficult sport. The most experienced climbers can still experience difficulties while climbing a mountain, which tells of the hazards of mountaineering. With this fact, how much more for the beginners? Certainly, mountain climbing beginners ought to be prepared before attempting any climb. Mountain climbing beginners have a lot of preparation to do before any climb. One of these is to get proper mountain climbing training first. Contrary to what many people think, mountain climbing isn’t getting up one morning and deciding to climb the nearest mountain. There is proper training involved, which includes techniques such as roping, rappelling, emergency signals, and essential tips. One of the essential tips that a mountain climbing novice or beginner ought to know are his own limits. It has been said that you are the only one that knows your body, and most mountaineers find this to be true. That being said, mountain climbing beginners shouldn’t set Mt. Everest among their first ten peaks to conquer – it will be too much. Another tip is to never climb alone, beginners more importantly. Novice mountain climbers are more likely to experience hazards they have never seen before, and they could panic should these unforeseen things happen. Of course, panicking can only cause people to think cloudily and may cause more danger. Mountain climbing beginners may also be surprised at the equipment needed, which are all essential for climbing, particularly when dealing with certain mountain ranges (e.g. the Alps). Since the equipment will be quite an investment, novices may elect not to purchase them, or just get the cheapest ones regardless of quality. This could prove to be a mistake, since equipment is perhaps the second most important thing in mountain climbing, next to proper training. Finally, it is important to know the weather beforehand. It would be stupid to climb when weather forecasts are predicting a snowstorm in the general vicinity. It would also be stupid to attempt a climb without first knowing the weather conditions. Beginners ought to gain experience first by climbing some of the easier peaks. When they get the hang of it, that’s the best time to move into a more difficult mountain, and so on, until the time comes to conquer Mt. Everest.

Provo Canyon School has one of the finest Recreational Therapy (R.T.) programs for an adolescent residential treatment center in the United States of America. Fully licensed, trained, and skilled recreation therapists work directly with teams of youth and direct-care staff to provide powerful experiential treatment. Recreation therapists do work with individuals, with groups of teams, and with families when they visit Provo Canyon School. Recreation therapy includes a vast array of recreational and fun activities that are therapeutic in purpose. In other words, they aren’t just done to entertain or have diversionary fun, but to establish insights to emotional and behavioral problems, and to empower positive growth. Such activities at Provo Canyon School include high task on the ropes course, low tasks, games, primitive skills, rock climbing, rappelling, hiking, skiing, rafting, and camping. Some last for one hour, others can last for several days.

Many Provo Canyon School programs do recreation therapy as a stand-alone experience, instead of an integrated therapeutic tool. However, at Provo Canyon School, R.T. is viewed as part of a team concept, and actively integrates therapists, coaches, and students who are part of a team. Significant empowerment comes from these activities. Youth that come for care to Provo Canyon School are, by nature, active and aggressive, and being outside doing something adventurous or active usually brings a deeper involvement and greater insights. Some of the most powerful therapy is done on the trail or in camp or while participating in a stimulating or challenging experience. This article addresses experiences that often come from R.T. at Provo Canyon School.

While studying about geology at Provo Canyon School, a recreational therapist, a school teacher, and a therapist join together in taking a class of students on a hike in the Utah desert where they find geodes. Geodes (Greek geoides, “earthlike”) are geological rock formations which occur in sedimentary and certain volcanic rocks. Geodes are essentially rock cavities or vugs with internal crystal formations or concentric banding. The exterior of the most common geodes is generally limestone or a related rock, while the interior contains quartz crystals and/or chalcedony deposits. Other geodes are completely filled with crystal, being solid all the way through. These types of geodes are called nodules.

The group finds a geode that is plain colored and quite ugly on the outside, but the inside is filled with beautiful purple Amethyst crystals. The Provo Canyon School therapists bring the boys together in a process group and ask them to describe how the geode is like themselves. The discussion carries that they can often feel or appear unattractive on the outside, but the inside, where they keep their deepest feelings hidden, can be quite beautiful. They learn to judge the inside of a person, instead of the outside. They learn how drug abuse, misbehavior, discouragement, depression, and other problems can make them appear dangerous or ugly on the outside, and cover the beautiful or attractive attributes that lie inside. Individual youth can begin to identify the things that are inwardly good and even great about them, and why they seem to try to keep those attributes hidden. Members of the Provo Canyon School group share the inner nice qualities that they see in each other, and this builds individual self-esteem, as well as team unity and trust. This opens up all kinds of discussions in individual and family therapy.

The Provo Canyon School group also finds desert marbles. These are dark, rust-colored, round stone-like objects that are actually formed out of desert sand. Sand contains the mineral “iron”, which gives it a reddish color. When water and iron mix, they form a compound called “iron oxide” that is hard and metal-like. Yet, inside the hard shell, they find softer sandstone that they can scrap out with a stick or even their fingernail. Again, the R.T. member of the Provo Canyon School group leads the boys in a discussion about life and hidden pain. They begin to see how, like the desert marble, they have begun to build up a hard, resistive shell around their softer inner feelings. The boys begin to see that just as the red iron mineral in the soft sand bled out and combined with oxygen and water to form a hard, protective shell, so have their painful experiences in life caused their need for love, acceptance, guidance, and achievement to bleed and combine with other things to form dangerous and self-destructive behaviors. This discussion brings insights to some of the events in their lives that have caused pain, discouragement, and hopelessness. For those boys who are recovering from drug abuse or another addiction, they can begin to see how the addiction has built a shell around them. Again, this opens the boys up to sharing some of their challenges, and helps them see that they still have a soft inner part that is good. This has the potential to restore hope and vision. It also helps them bond together as a team when they are back at Provo Canyon School.

Last of all, the Provo Canyon School group finds a piece of petrified wood. The teacher explains the process of petrification to the boys while they pass the piece of rock around and look closely at its molecular structure. The Provo Canyon School teacher explains that the wood was covered by volcanic ash some thousands of years ago. So covered, the wood underwent the influences of pressure and heat and water action. Water seeped down into the wood over time and slowly replaced each wood molecule with mineral (rock) molecules. The transfer was so precise that the image of the wood was completely preserved, right down to its bark, texture, grain, and growth rings. The Provo Canyon School teacher explains that over time, with heat, pressure, and water, a soft, pliable, usable piece of wood was turned into stone. The Provo Canyon School therapist asks the boys to think about if there is such a thing as human petrification. He asks them to identify the forces in their lives that have caused heat, pressure, and stress, and perhaps began to harden them. This may include drugs, lying, abuse, dishonesty, hopelessness, discouragement, and other things. They begin to see that if they continue this process over time, they may become like rocks, having only the image of a human being. They begin to identify those attributes that real men and women have that make them soft and useful to others around them.

These and other experiences like them can be powerful influences for insight and change in youth. They far outstrip the traditional couch therapy and normal classroom instruction to which they are necessarily subjected while back at Provo Canyon School. These types of experiences should be written down in a growth or change journal, and discussed in individual and family therapy sessions. It is crucial that the Provo Canyon School primary therapist, recreation therapists, and other direct care staff, including coaches and teachers (when it is appropriate) participate with the boys and girls in this type of experiential therapy, so that they can experience and process with the youth these precious growth moments.

Recreation therapy plays a specific and important role at Provo Canyon School. It is not just something Provo Canyon School staff use to entertain youthful clients and their parents. It is a significant part of the integrated plan of care that empowers a youth to make true growth in recognizing, committing, and actually making needed changes in his or her life.

Many people dream of having amazing adventures like one might see in the movies. Other vacationers decide to vacation at the same unadventurous location. If you are looking for a change from the ordinary and want to bring some real adventure into your life, you might want to consider taking an adventure tour for your next vacation. An adventure tour can be made up of a number of different components, but the end result is that you get to explore the best that the world has to offer in a hands-on way. Keep in mind that adventure tours are not for everyone; read these examples of common adventure tour components to see if one is right for you and your family.

Most adventure tours involve hiking at one point or another, generally in conjunction with camping. Some of the hikes may be relatively short, serving as a down-to-earth method of transportation between larger components of the tour. Other hikes can be quite long, comprising a major part of the tour’s attraction. Many of the longer hikes have basic recommendations for your fitness level or they may ill require that you have a certain amount of hiking experience before you take them simply because the distances would be difficult for an out of shape individual to cover safely and in time with the rest of the group.

White water rafting is a common component of an adventure tour. Tours exist that take you on all grades of rivers, though the higher grades usually require a certain amount of rafting experience, which helps prevent you from being a danger to yourself and others. Some tours may even take you across different grades on different days, letting you build up experience over the course of the tour, allowing you to be ready for larger rapids later. Most rafting tours involve camping and may include hikes in between river sections as well.

Although not as common as rafting, a number of tours include a kayaking component as well. A number of these tours are featured in Alaska, where kayaking has somewhat of a cultural component; Alaskan kayak tours are often done in the open ocean. Kayaking is generally not the largest component of the tour, though dedicated kayaking tours do exist.

Another element that is incorporated into a number of adventure tours is rock climbing or rappelling. There is a larger element of danger involved with rock climbing than with a standard hiking tour, but the sense of accomplishment and adventure is well worth it. Many adventure tours that feature rock climbing or rappelling are centered in mountainous regions where climbing may be the primary focus of the tour. There are some hiking tours, which feature rock climbing as just a single component of the tour.

Other extreme sports may also be featured in adventure tours, though they are not as common as the elements that have already be mentioned. Some adventure tours incorporate bungee jumping, cliff diving, hang gliding, and similar activities in addition to hiking and more common components. Finding these tours may be a bit more difficult than finding a basic hiking tour, but if you are looking for a major thrill, these tours can definitely provide that extra sense of excitement.

It should be noted that not all adventure tours are wilderness based; many adventure tour companies have packages, which allow you to experience the adventures of modern life. Tours can go to cities like Las Vegas and San Francisco are relatively common, and some of them even manage to mix city entertainment components with wilderness adventure in the outlying natural parks as well. Other tours are based out of an RV, which you take from one location to the next for each daily event. Some adventure tours contain components such as paintball or other team competitions as well. These are all exciting activities, which are excellent if you are looking to escape from the traditional trip to the beach. Although these may not be as relaxing as the beach, they sure provide excitement and a new thrill to your life.

Regardless of which type of adventure tour you choose, you can expect to have a great time while on the tour. Many adventure tours consist of hiking and camping, but they may also have secondary components such as kayaking and rock climbing. If these are not what you are looking for, there are adventure tours that include extreme sports such as bungee jumping, cliff diving or hang-gliding. The length of the tours can vary from 2-3 days to up to 2 weeks or more, so you should be able to find a tour that meets your exact requirements. If you are looking for a non-traditional vacation, it is highly recommended to try an adventure vacation because it provides an experience that should last a lifetime.

Mountaineering, mountain climbing, top rope, bouldering or rock climbing, whatever you want to call it, these names all pertain to the wonderful and exciting sport of reaching the peak of a goal. Experienced climbers know the adventure and fun in store in climbing a mountain. There are many trails, sites and stopovers that can definitely provide you a whole new perspective. People sometimes need a change of scenery to refresh the body and the mind. Mountain climbing and exploring the outdoors can give the right setting for such needs. This is also a good opportunity to get closer to nature. Thus, it is best for you to explore this wholesome activity. This is one good way to challenge your body. This is also a way to stimulate the mind and spirit by giving it a refreshing drive. You will do more than just mere hiking when you go mountain climbing. You will also get to learn how to work well with other people in a group, proper balancing, controlling movements, following a lead and even taking safety considerations. Rappelling is also one thing that you can only enjoy here. It will definitely be one of the best decisions you will make in your lifetime. Thus, if you are interested in learning the many ways of mountain climbing and rappelling, you must do your homework. Research on how you can start on this activity and take initiative in making this plan a reality. Some Helpful Tips for Climbing and Rappelling Activities For most beginners, this exciting sport will have to be properly prepared to ensure safety and fun at all times. Here are some points to keep in mind when you go mountain climbing and rappelling. 1. Climbing Guides First consideration is the need to take caution at every step of the way. It is best to get the assistance of a climbing guide. Basically, the guide will keep you on track. Make sure that he or she is qualified enough to take on the task. A certification by the IFMGA or the International Federation of Mountain Guides Association will be a good assurance. 2. Get Proper Instruction There are many equipment, terms and techniques that you will encounter in climbing. These will come in handy as you communicate with fellow climbers and learn the various ways they do their climbing and rappelling. As such, it is best to get the right education when it comes to such things. There are instructions offered by climbing guides, groups or organizations that can cater to your level of ability. Be sure to take this opportunity. The beginners can be best taught the proper ways in climbing and rappelling through training. Indoor man-made rock walls will help in giving you a feel of what you will face outdoors. Most people find rappelling down more difficult than climbing up. If you train indoors, you can learn rappelling techniques until you are confident enough. This way, you can easily learn even if you are still trying to overcome your fears. You can also choose to get personal instruction on your rappelling abilities. The personal instructor can very well adjust to your pace and guide you in every detail that you need to focus on. 3. Have the Right Equipment Any climbing and rappelling endeavors must also be supported by the right equipment at hand. Make sure you have all the necessary things on hand. The helmet is a must to keep you head safe from any falling debris, bumps, or bruises. The climbing shoes must also be worn to keep you safe from any slippery steps. Check also the climbing package. Make sure you have all the tools needed like the food, rope, chalk, harness among many others. Make sure also that you take care of your equipment really well. For example, if you want to focus more on rappelling, you must keep the necessary things at hand. Protect your rappel and know how to use it when the need arises. By doing these things, you can easily focus on the fun experience. Conclusion Mountain climbing and rappelling may be foreign to you for now, but with the right research, preparation and training, you will definitely be one of those raving on how fun these adventures can get.
