Life in the Marine Corps is in many ways like a civilian job once you have completed all of your training and schooling. In a typical civilian job, most people work from about 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. They show up for work in the morning grab a cup of coffee and often start their day with some sort of regular routine before focusing on more specific tasks that need to be completed. Around noon a one hour lunch is taken and in the afternoon specific task’s are focused upon. Life in the Marines is much the same way!
I was an infantryman in the Marine Corps for four years from 1993 1997. The first 6 months of my four years as an active duty Marine were much different than a civilian job. The first six months for me consisted of boot camp, and formal infantry training at what is known as the School of Infantry (SOI). We all are pretty much aware of what boot camp is like. In boot camp, nasty civilians are transformed into one of the few, the proud, a Marine! You will get yelled at a lot, you will PT (physical training) a lot, and you will either lose or gain a lot of weight! You will learn how to fire a rifle with pinpoint accuracy at 500 yards, learn how to wear a uniform correctly, and will learn about the many traditions and customs Marines live by. You’ll also learn a lot about Marine Corps history, first aid, and how to do basic warfare. In three months you will be transformed into one of the Few. I won’t lie; boot camp is tough, very tough. Once you get through it though, you will be a much better person for it and will be bursting with confidence.
After boot camp comes your formal schooling. It is at this point that you will attend some sort of school to learn the skills needed to perform your job well. It may be communication school, the school of infantry, or some kind of avionics school. Whatever it is, it will be much easier than boot camp and you will have much more freedom than in boot camp. At this point, you will be considered a “boot” a Marine who has just completed boot camp. Boots still have no idea what the “real Marine Corps” is like. The real Marine Corps in known as “the Fleet” or “FMF”, the Fleet Marine Force!
Once you are in the FMF, your real job begins. In the FMF your life will be very similar to a civilian’s life. You will be paid a salary, and will work from about 5:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m much of the time. In the infantry, you will often start your day with a healthy dose of PT (physical training). The PT will often consist of a multi-mile run, combined with other exercises like push-ups, sit-ups, side-straddle-hops, etc. When you are “in the rear” or not out in the field training, you will often have classes about such things as how to read a map, how to do first aid, how to call in mortar fire, and how to conduct a patrol. Other times you will be preparing for the next field exercise by packing up your gear and getting briefed on what type of exercise it will be. As a boot, you will be sent on “working parties”. These are odd jobs that need to be done around the base and within your unit. You may be asked to help sort gear at supply, help build wooden tank targets for a firing range, or you might just be out picking up trash. Whatever you are asked, do it and do it well you will be rewarded for it. The rest of the time, you will be performing your job. For an infantryman, that means conducting field exercises. This includes attacking an enemy position at a live fire range, shooting live rounds and throwing live grenades in a house made out of tires, and rappelling of the side of a 100 foot rock wall. When you are done with these field exercises, you’ll return to “the rear” and the cycle will begin again. That’s the very bare bones basics of what it is like in the Marines as an infantryman.
Of course, there is much, much more to it than what I have just described here. If you have a question about what life is like as a Marine Corps Infantryman, find your way to this free Marine Corps Community where there are hundreds of members willing to answer your questions! I’d be more than willing to answer any question you may have myself!

Some camps have a targeted focus like religious study, academics, and competitive sports. Camps often focus on specialties that include: adventure, art, computer, dance, music, religion, horse riding, sports, theatre, and many others. There are overnight summer camps with a focus on self-improvement, weight loss and grief counseling.
Basically, if you can think of any subject of interest, there’s probably a camp that specializes in it. The camp you choose for your child will provide a lifetime of good memories and will be truly rewarding. There are overnight summer camps that are co-ed camps, boy’s camps, girl’s camps or brother-sister camps where boys and girls may have separate venues and activities.
Overnight summer camp is also known as a sleepaway camp when campers spend their nights at the camp; some camps do allow both daytime and overnight campers. There are popular overnight summer camps in every state in the U.S. and every province in Canada; there are camps in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and just about every country in the world. Selecting the right camp that fits into your child or teen’s interests, special interests, needs, special needs and abilities will be one of the first steps
Although camp counselor jobs don’t usually pay very well, usually minimum wage or less, counselors receive free room and board; many take the job primarily for the camping experience. Camps should have at least a 40% to 60% return staff ratio, which shows that the camp is seen as a good place to spend a summer. There are many types of overnight summer camps with a focus on education that cater to students with differing ages and academic interests.
Children or teens could typically explore subjects new to them like marine science, photography, creative writing, community service, drama, magic, scuba diving, video production, comic book design, crime scene forensics, cooking, yoga, rappelling, etc. Non-profit camps often range from $1200 to $3000 for four weeks and $2500 to $5000 for eight weeks. Do you think, if you have more than one child, they would they benefit from attending the same summer camp together?
The best overnight summer sports camps do much more than just improve a camper’s soccer, tennis, lacrosse, or wrestling skills – they help each child become a more skillful athlete, a more gracious competitor, a more committed team player, and a more confident person. The reputation of an overnight summer camp can also be determined by asking what percentage of counselors returned from the previous year. Get to know the camp director from an in-person visit to your home if possible, phone conversations, email or other correspondence.
Four weeks at a good private overnight summer camp or sleepaway camp will cost anywhere from $3500 to $6500, and eight weeks will range from $4000 to $7000. Some camps are often called adventure camps – having a very specific theme or interest; many of these programs emphasize skill development and personal growth through the adventures the offer. Consider these industry-recommended guidelines – for smaller children ages 7 and 8, there should be one counselor for every six campers; by age 15, there should be one counselor for every 10 campers.
If you spend the time needed to research your options and include your child in all the decisions, he or she will most likely have a memorable experience that provides opportunities to grow while having a lot of fun and making new friends. Typically an overnight summer camp experience will leave a lot of wonderful memories for the child or teen camper. Homesickness is a frequent problem, but with a caring camp counselor most campers adjust easily. Choosing a camp close to home will save a lot of money on airfare and possible hotel or motel overnight stays for a parent, or other transportation costs; this is especially true if your child might get a case of homesickness and want to come home early from the overnight summer camp.

We may equate medical evacuation with the military but med-evac services can save the life of ordinary citizens faced with extraordinary circumstances. Whether you are injured while rappelling down a mountain or experience chest pain while strolling through a museum, an air ambulance can save your life when traveling abroad.

Stan and Jenny were spending their two week vacation in Costa Rica. They were staying at a friend’s home and using his jeep while there. While navigating the twisting roads, Stan hit a rock and the jeep flipped over. Jenny escaped with minor cuts and bruises but Stan needed to be hospitalized. Both wanted to go home immediately but Stan could not travel on a commercial air flight. Not knowing what else to do they remained in Costa Rica for 4 weeks until Stan was well enough to fly home.

It’s hard enough to experience illness or injury at home but being in need of medical services while traveling in a foreign country can be disconcerting. You are away from the support of family and friends and the familiarity of your health system. A little advance planning can help you prepare if you need emergency medical care while traveling abroad.

We often see med-evac teams traveling by helicopter. However, the mode of transport may be ground, air escort, jet or even a Cessna. The staffing, medical equipment and mode are all dependent on your medical condition and needs. The air ambulance company can suggest several medically appropriate alternatives to meet your needs.

An air ambulance service can safely transport you from a hospital abroad to a hospital in your town. Your medical support team coordinates bedside to bedside service ensuring your safe transport back home. The medical team can also provide medical assistance while traveling.

If you are injured or hospitalized while you are traveling abroad, you or a family member can call the air ambulance service directly to arrange transport home. Having their number with you will facilitate this process. The air ambulance company can manage the communication between the hospital facilities, physicians, insurance company, airports and your family.

When planning your travel abroad, include the number of an air ambulance company in your emergency contacts. If you are injured or become ill while on vacation, air ambulance teams can safely and quickly arrange to transport you back home.

“Le résultat net progresse de 48 % mais le BPA de 27 % seulement du fait d’exceptionnels élevés. Le résultat net devrait dépasser € 243 million en 2003, et le BPA € 23.”

And here is the correct translation:

“Net earnings went up 48% but EPS only rose by 27% due to high exceptionals. We expect net earnings to exceed € 243 million in 2003, and EPS € 23.”

Some definitions, for non-financial readers:

Résultat net (net earnings): income after taxation recorded by a company at the end of the financial year.

BPA – “benefice par actions” (EPS – earnings per share): net earnings divided by the number of outstanding shares of common stock.

Exceptionnels (exceptionals): income earned or expenditure spent on transactions that are not part of a company’s usual business operations. For example, if a company sells a subsidiary for € 1 million, it will record an exceptional profit or income of € 1 million at the end of the year.

First machine translation:

“The net income increases by 48 % but the BPA of 27 % only because of exceptional high. Should the net income exceed? 243 million in 2003, and the BPA? 23″

Second machine translation:

“The net result progresses of 48% but the BPA of 27% only owing to exceptional students. The net result should surpass € 243 million in 2003, and the BPA € 23.”

Comments:

    * Both systems failed to recognize and translate the abbreviation “BPA” (bénéfice par action = EPS).

    * Both also translated “exceptionnels” as an adjective rather than a noun – with the second system then introducing a totally irrelevant noun (”students”), making the entire sentence nonsensical.

    * Both translations also contain grammatical errors (of/by).

We then decided to see whether the systems coped better with a short legal text. In fact, as you will see, the results were even worse, with the machines producing completely meaningless sentences in a mixture of French and English.

This is a standard note taken from a Summons to appear in court (”Assignation”), notifying the recipient that legal proceedings have been started against him/her/it.

Here is the correct translation:

“The recipient(s) is (are) reminded that, in accordance with sections 56 and 853 of the French Code of Civil Procedure (Code de Procédure Civile):

Parties are responsible for their own defence, although they may be assisted or represented by any person of their choice. If the person representing them is not a French lawyer (avocat), he/she must produce a special power of attorney.

If they fail to appear or be represented, a judgment may be entered against them solely on the basis of arguments and evidence presented by the other party(ies).”

First machine translation:

“It is pointed out au(x) recipient, in accordance with articles 56 and 853 of the Code of Civil procedure:

That the parts defend themselves or qu?elles have the ability to be made assist or represent by all people of their choice; that their representative, s?il n?est Lawyer, must justify d?un special capacity.

That fault of appearing or of being made represent, they s?exposent with this qu?un judgement is returned against them on the only elements provided by leur(s) adversary.”

Second machine translation:

“It is recalled to the (x)

What the parties defend themselves themselves or qu’elles have the faculty to do to attend itself or represent by all persons of their choice; that representing for them, s’il n’est Lawyer, must justify d’un to be able special.

What for lack of appear or to do to represent itself, they s’exposent to this qu’un judgement is returned against them on the alone elements furnish by them (leur(s)).”

What a mumbo-jumbo!

Machine translation is not even remotely close to replacing the human mind.

Both Navy SEALs and Army Rangers are highly respected but distinctly separate wings of the United States armed services. Army Rangers and Special forces both roll up to the U.S. Army, while on the other hand Marines and Navy SEALs roll up to the U.S. Navy.

Army Rangers

With origins dating back to colonial times the Army Rangers are part of the US Operations Special Forces that became a more permanent part of the military around the 1970’s.Army Rangers are front line special light infantry American troops and their primary focus is on infiltration by land, air or even sea they are specialized in the recovery of personnel and special equipment, conducting raids and direct action operations.

Selection

To be selected to be a Ranger a soldier has to prove his physical capability through various endurance tests designed to establish that he’s physically capable of entering the program. Once into ‘Ranger School’ his training is categorized into three phases namely Crawl training, Walk training and Run training.

Crawl training: is to develop the foundations and trains the soldier in hand –to hand combat, immersion in water and the use of fists and sticks in combat.

Walk training: covers rappelling, ambush training, knots tying and intermediate level airborne operations.

Run training: is the advanced training covering such aspects as water bound infiltration, troop extraction in hostile situations, working with explosives, skills for sabotage, navigation and reconnaissance

Only on completion of the above does a Ranger officially graduate from Ranger School.

Navy SEALs

The Navy SEALs were established formally around the 1960’s but have their roots dating back to the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Navy SEALs specialize in sea, air and land specific missions and operations, Basic Underwater Demolitions (BUD), reconnaissance, information warfare, personnel recovery, unconventional warfare, counter terrorism, internal defense on foreign soil, and security assistance.

Selection

In order to make it as a Navy SEAL an individual has to undergo a seven month long Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training which is divided into phases:

Indoctrination: to prepare the new initiates physically and mentally for the gruelling training ahead and the ways of the Navy SEAL.

Similarities

Both Army Rangers and Navy SEALs undergo very Intense and gruelling training programs designed to weed out the ones who just don’t cut it.

The U.S. Navy SEALs and the U.S. Army Rangers do not recruit women. Women do however work in several significant posts in support levels with the Navy SEALs, and serve at group levels in the U.S. Army Special Forces.

Both elite units exist for covert operations and while there are several differences in the way they operate there are definitely areas of overlap in terms of functions.

Differences

Rangers operate in platoon sized or larger units and are capable of handling direct action missions while Navy SEALs operate in smaller teams and handle specialised covert operations.

Rangers primarily perform military support functions while Navy SEALs are primarily for selective roles and most often not directly get involved in “front line” combat.

The Rangers are typically known to be ready for rapid deployment, has an airborne advanced infantry and generally tends to fight primarily using conventional warfare. Navy SEALs on the other hand are responsible for unconventional warfare, they are all trained paratroopers, they integrate with foreign forces, are generally independent and have high sustainability working within small groups with limited or no support; they specialise and execute underwater reconnaissance , infiltrations and demolitions.

While both Army Rangers and Navy SEALs are highly skilled specialized forces whose functions tend to overlap, the Army Rangers specialty is land warfare, while the Navy SEAL as the name suggests excels where water bodies are involved.

From the sand of the Spanish coasts to the green lands of the Spanish rural side, the country of Spain has a lot to offer.

When the holiday season arrives, the heat and sun are some of the most common factors people expect and fly down to the south to popular destinations as Spain, France or Portugal. The coasts start to get crowded at the end of June, and during the summer time people mostly from several European countries meet in the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts.

Apart from the well known beaches in Spain, this country has beautiful landscapes where families and friends can enjoy a holiday in the country.

Spanish people appreciate the value of getting peace up in the mountains a lot, where pure nature and wonderful landscapes are the best frames for the holiday memories. No matter which season of the year we are in, you can always enjoy a rural holiday.

Northern Spain looks green and fresh and mountains, lakes and snow are part of the scenery during the winter time. There´s nothing best than enjoy of this paradise from a quality limestone house with chimney.

The south has a great variety of rural areas as well, where anyone is impressed by the vast nature and mountains in “Sierra de Cazorla” (Jaen), “The Chorro Lake” (Malaga) or “Las Alpujarras” (Granada). From North to South, Spain’s beautiful countryside invites those who love to escape from the noise of cars and pollution, to the delightful smell of pines and Eucalyptus.

There are plenty of activities to be done when going to the countryside: hiking, rafting, rappel, fishing and hunting are some of them. You can also practice winter sports all over Spain, as there are very good ski resorts all over the country, where Alpine skiing and cross-country ski can be perfectly practiced in numerous ski resorts as Sierra Nevada, Formigal or Candanchu, for instance.

Explore the rural side of Spain, and get impressed by its beauty!

When exploring Mendoza after my Spanish course, I found out that the city is more than a wine capital as most seem to believe. Snowed peaks and slopes are marvelous for ski beginners as well as for professionals; you can combine your Spanish course with regular ski lessons.

The most renowned ski resort is, without a doubt, Las Leñas. Las Leñas counts with a high quality snow internationally recognized and ski runs for all levels. You can spend entire days enjoying all the facilities offered and practicing what you have learnt during your Spanish course with locals. Another famous ski centre is Penitentes Ski Resort settled at the base of the Mount Aconcagua very close to Chile. Penitentes is excellent to spend a weekend after you finish your Spanish course, since it counts with an incredible hotel and entertainment spots for young, kids and adults.

River rapids in Mendoza are also fantastic. Professional operators will take you to the Mendoza River with all necessary equipment and instructions to have a great experience. Generally these activities might take a whole day, so keep that in mind so as not to interfere with your Spanish course. Mendoza counts with all levels of rapids and pure water rivers formed by glaciers thaws. During your Spanish course you will learn specific vocabulary for these particular activities.

Apart from taking a regular Spanish course you can’t miss practicing rafting and becoming an adrenaline junkie in Mendoza! Paragliding, horse riding, canoeing and rappel are some other of the many sports you can enjoy in Mendoza after your Spanish course.

Fly fishing is another incredible sport that has become one of the most important in the region, practice by all visitors taking a Spanish course in Argentina. Although the city has been recognized as the capital of extreme sports, Mendoza also shines for its tranquil and quiet lakes perfect to practice fly fishing. During your Spanish course ask your teacher about how the building of hydroelectrically dams has helped arid regions in Mendoza and the fishing sport, providing the formation of deep blue swimming pools where fishes accumulate.

Another relaxing activity far from the frenetic rhythm of extreme sports is horse riding, practiced in Los Andes. Many Spanish courses include this outdoor activity enjoyed along the incredible mountain ranges of Mendoza. You will go through the pre- Cordillera and encounter beautiful views and traditional chacras. Typical horseback riding tours for visitors taking a Spanish course include barbecues and bird watching. This kind of excursion usually takes all day and is the perfect opportunity to discover nature and have a break from your Spanish course. Don’t forget to take abundant water, appropriate clothes, sun protector, hat and sunglasses.

Apart from its natural offer, the city downtown is a bustling and commercial area, full of coffee shops and avenues traversed by riverbeds and tree lines. Learning Spanish in Mendoza is a great choice, since the city is perfectly equipped to receive foreigners who come to take a Spanish course.

Panama is blessed with nature’s beauty.
